Historia Ecclesiae Marcaliensis – Church history of Marcali Permanent exhibition in the loft of the Catholic Church of Marcali (Marcali, Hősök tere)
Open – on previous appointment – during the office hours of the parsonage: Monday-Friday: 8.30-12.00 a.m.; 2.00-5.30 p.m.
The exhibition presenting memories of church history of the Roman Catholic Church of Marcali came into being on the initiative of the Catholic community of the town. The aim was to preserve and present the rich collection of church history owned by the Catholic Church and parsonage. Professional assistance has been offered by the Museum of Local History of the town Marcali. The first, smaller room of the exhibition houses religious objects of a family, the first community in which people (children) live during their first years of life. The sacral collection has been offered by the catholic congregation of the town. From the first room symbolising the religious atmosphere of family life the visitor enters a former patronage loft. The visitor witnesses the way and development of the individual from family life, to school and community as well as how he becomes a member of the Church. The exhibits are liturgical objects, books, documents, memories of the history of religious education in Marcali, as in the second half of the twentieth century this room has served as a place of religious instruction. Where the present parish church stands and houses the exhibition, a church consecrated to Bishop Saint Anianus was built in 1404, but destroyed during the Turkish occupation. The present facade of the church is result of a series of reconstructions from the eighteenth century on. The exhibition is in memory of all those who were active part of the parish of Marcali during the past centuries.
